Nodal Exchange today announced growth in power, gas, and environmental markets in August 2026. Nodal power futures volume for August was 214.2 MWh, up 8% from July 2026. The majority of U.S. power futures open interest is on Nodal Exchange with 1.451 billion MWh and 55% market share as of the end of August 2026.
Nodal Exchange announced on August 31 the launch of 168 new power hourly futures contracts available across 7 locations. For each location, there are 24 contracts available representing a single hour of the day, with the next 5 days of expiries available for trading. These new power contracts allow participants to manage real-time positions, hour-by-hour, directly on Nodal and are the first hourly futures contracts to be offered by Nodal Exchange.
Nodal’s natural gas markets futures trading reached 51.2 million MMBtu in August 2026, up 61% from 31.8 million MMBtu in August 2025. Open interest in Nodal’s natural gas markets reached 25.1 MMBtu as of the end of August, a 147% increase from a year ago.
Environmental futures and options on Nodal Exchange posted volume of 35,150 lots in August. Open interest ended the month at 454,313 lots, up 12% from a year earlier.
Carbon futures and options posted volume of 12,792 lots, with open interest of 70,505 lots. Renewable energy certificates (RECs) on Nodal posted volume of 20,739 lots, with open interest of 365,799 lots.
Nodal, in collaboration with IncubEx, launched financially-settled futures and options contracts based on OPIS daily price assessments on August 17th. The new product offering includes WCA vs. CCA (OPIS) Spread Futures and California Low Carbon Fuel Standard Credit (OPIS) Futures & Options.
